Program Summary
Virginia Mason's Department of Facial Plastic Surgery offers a one-year fellowship program in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery accredited by American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). The Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship (FPRS) provides hands-on training and exposure to the breadth of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. The fellowship includes a high volume, state-of-the-art service using nationally-recognized, system-based approaches to facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, including adult cosmetic surgery, rhinoplasty, facial rejuvenation, cosmetic oculoplasty, microvascular surgery and a large volume of reconstructive procedures.
Under the leadership and supervision of Fellowship Director Michael Nuara, MD, the fellow performs a minimum of 500 cases, with opportunities to participate as part of a multidisciplinary team in robust clinic and inpatient care.

Eligibility
Applicants must have completed an ACGME or RCPSC-accredited residency in otolaryngology or plastic surgery. Candidates must complete the AAFPRS Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship online application, including:
- Curriculum Vitae
- Operative Experience Report
- Future Plan Statement, which should include your future goals, intentions, and reason you have chosen facial plastic surgery
- Medical School Transcript (official with Registrar’s signature)
- 3 letters of reference; one must be from the Department Chair
Curriculum
The primary goal of the Fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is to give the fellow the clinical and surgical skills to excel in a otolaryngology career and serve as an ambassador for themself, the profession and Virginia Mason. Specifically, thefellowship curriculumaims to teach requisite cognitive and technical aspects of surgical facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, including:
- Understanding relevant processes, their presentation and management
- Analysis and interpretation of radiographic data
- Understanding the indications and contraindications for procedures
- Pre- and post-procedure care of the patient
- Recognition and management of complications
- Appropriate documentation and reporting
- Appropriate communication with the patient and the multidisciplinary team
- Research, presentation and publication in the field
