Job Summary and Responsibilities

The Center for Cardiovascular Health (CCH) at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH) is seeking a talented Cardiac Surgeon to join our rapidly growing team at Virginia Mason Medical Center (VMMC) campus in Seattle, WA. The Section of Cardiac Surgery at VMMC offers expertise with some of the most advanced treatment options for cardiac conditions, with the lowest risk of mortality.  VMMC is a world-renowned institution with a multi year, 3 Star Rating by the Society of Thoracic Surgery and recognized by U.S. News & World Report in 2023 as 46th in Cardiac Surgery and Cardiology Care in the United States. VMMC has been ranked as the No. 1 hospital in Washington State and the Seattle Metro area for 2025 by U.S. News & World Report. 


We perform all aspects of adult cardiac surgery including coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, aortic surgery, structural heart procedures, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, arrhythmia surgery and mechanical circulatory support. In addition, we offer comprehensive care for the most challenging cases including surgery for heart failure, redo cardiac surgery, complex aortic surgery, revisional and multi-valve reconstructions and septal myectomy.

Currently at VMMC we perform annually more than 400 major cardiac cases, have an established ECMO program and our annual structural heart volume is approximately 200 TAVRs, 50 Mitraclips and industry trials for transcatheter mitral and tricuspid valve implantations.  Our team is active in clinical research with several clinical trials in cardiology, structural heart and cardiac surgery.

The Center for Cardiovascular Health comprises over 180 providers in all cardiovascular specialties (Cardiology, Advanced HF, Electrophysiology, Interventional and Structural cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Cardiac Anesthesiology). We are one of the largest providers of cardiac services in Western Washington. We have three tertiary care sites with comprehensive cardiovascular services and perform over 1200 cardiac surgeries and 500 structural cases annually.

  • Employed team of 2 full-time cardiac surgeons (this position will make it 3 FTEs)
  • Consistent growing volume of routine and complex cardiac surgery
  • 5 full-time Cardiac PA’s support operative cases, inpatient service and call
  • Opportunities to participate in research and clinical trials as supported by the Benaroya Research Institute of VMMC.

Job Requirements
  • MD/DO with completion of an ACGME- accredited cardiothoracic surgery fellowship.
  • Minimum of 2 years-experience in adult cardiothoracic surgery highly preferred
  • New graduates with additional training will be considered.
  • Experience in ECMO/LVAD and TAVR preferred.
  • Board certified or eligible by American Board of Thoracic Surgeons
