Dignity Health Medical Group is seeking a passionate and dedicated Program Director (PD) to join our thriving and innovative Family Medicine Residency Program in Gilbert, Arizona with Creighton University East Valley Arizona. Primary participating sites are Dignity Health Mercy Gilbert Medical Center and Dignity Health Chandler Regional Medical Center . This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of future family physicians and shape the future of primary care.
Our Residency Program:
- Newly established program, accredited 2022
- Welcomed first class of residents June 2023 (filled all positions in the National Match 2023, 2024, 2025)
- Innovative new training model featuring two week mini blocks, POCUS, full spectrum family medicine and team based care
- Brand new practice center directly across the street from Mercy Gilbert Medical Center
- New Women & Children’s Pavilion wing (joint venture with Phoenix Children’s Hospital) at Mercy Gilbert Medical Center coming
- Program is part of a department of academic family medicine which is highly regarded program for Scholarly Activity, Research, and Innovation featuring more to 20 peer-reviewed publications and thirty national and regional presentations by residents and faculty in the Academic Year 2025
- This year, the program was approved by ACGME to increase complement from 6-6-6 (total 18 residents currently) to 8-8-8 (24 total). We are also working on adding a rural/underserved training track with 2-2-2 (6 total) to this program. The ultimate complement of residents will be 30 starting July 2029
Responsibilities:
- Outpatient (Inpatient and/or Ob optional for PD)
- Outpatient Mon-Fri days, Inpatient/Nursery Tues-Mon days
- Call is 1:4 or less (by telephone only with residents being first call)
- Outpatient: 12 patient-facing hours, 12 hours of precepting, and 16 hours of non-clinical teaching and admin per week (based on ACGME guidelines)
- Inpatient (optional for PD): Every 4th week or less frequently with supervision of the resident team, 1 week at a time x 7 days with compensation days provided (No outpatient duties during inpatient week)
- Avg 18-24 patients per day on outpatient days
- Great MA support + RN onsite
- Academic appointment at Creighton University School of Medicine, Phoenix–Open rank based on prior experience and academic output
- Teaching Medical students, Physician Assistant Students, and other learners when seeing patients.
- Opportunities to get involved in both sponsor and investigator initiated research projects
PD Responsibilities:
The Program Director will lead and oversee all aspects of the Family Medicine Residency Program, including:
- Curriculum Development and Implementation: Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of the residency curriculum, ensuring compliance with ACGME requirements and best practices in family medicine education in alignment with the mission of Creighton University School of Medicine and Dignity Health/CommonSpirit Health.
- Resident Recruitment and Selection: Leads the recruitment and selection process, including application review, interview coordination, and ranking.
- Resident Mentorship and Advising: Provide mentorship, guidance, and support to residents, fostering their professional development and well-being.
- Faculty Development: Contribute to the development and implementation of faculty development programs to enhance teaching skills and promote scholarly activity.
- Program Evaluation and Improvement: Establish and lead ongoing program evaluation and quality improvement initiatives to ensure the program meets its goals and objectives.
- Clinical Supervision: Provide direct clinical supervision to residents in clinical settings as applicable.
- Scholarly Activity: Engage in scholarly activity, such as research, presentations, and publications, to advance the field of family medicine education.
- Administrative Responsibilities: Serve as authority with full responsibility of administrative tasks related to program management, including scheduling, documentation, and reporting. Ensure alignment with policies of the sponsoring institution, participating sites/hospitals, and the medical group
- ACGME Compliance: Ensure the program's compliance with all ACGME requirements and regulations.

- Support and resources for scholarly activity and medical education skills in university academic environment
- Practice in a new clinic building with a deliberate “Clinic of the Future” design
- On-site Behavioral Health Faculty available in addition to the Integrated Behavioral Health services with Collaborative Care Model available to all care sites in the department.
- Ambulatory RN presence and support in the clinic in addition to dedicated Medical Assistant to physicians while seeing patients
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
- A Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or equivalent Doctor of Osteopathic (D.O.) or Foreign Equivalent is required.
- Board certification from ABMS or equivalent in Family Medicine is required.
- A minimum faculty appointment as an assistant professor with an associate professor or professor rank preferred.
- Previous experience in Graduate Medical Education (GME) in curriculum and program development or academic or other significant leadership in the discipline acceptable to the GMEC and Family Medicine Review Committee (RC) is required.
- Previous experience of research and scholarly activity such as regional/national presentations and/or peer-reviewed publications in the previous two academic years is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Successful experience in community engagement and outreach.
- A commitment to research, excellent leadership skills and a strong commitment to diversity and social justice.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Additional preferred qualifications include experience in a Medical School or at an Independent Academic Medical Center in administrative and leadership positions in Graduate Medical Education as Program Director, Associate Program Director, Medical Director, Core Faculty, or Clinic Director.
- The ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively with colleagues, leaders and staff at all levels, and the ability to work independently are all desired attributes for this position.
