The posted compensation range of $51.64 - $96.45 /hour is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay CommonSpirit in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting. As a Registered Nurse (RN) Certified Midwife you are responsible for managing the care of essentially healthy women and co-managing with a physician, the care of those clients who develop problems that put them at a greater risk. As a Certified Midwife RN will be trained to assist women during childbirth, antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care. Delivers babies and assists physicians in procedures such as C-sections. While in this RN position you will perform gynecological exams, prenatal care and education to patients.
This position will help support our OB laborists. Please see duties listed below.
Conducting routine prenatal appointments (checking blood pressure, weight, urine, fetal heart tones, fundal height).
Providing comprehensive education on topics such as nutrition, exercise, childbirth preparation, breastfeeding, newborn care, and potential complications.
Answering patient questions and addressing concerns about pregnancy.
Ordering and interpreting lab tests and ultrasounds.
Assessing risk factors and identifying potential complications.
Counseling on lifestyle modifications (smoking cessation, alcohol avoidance, etc.).
Developing individualized care plans.
Triage & Assessment:
Evaluating pregnant patients presenting to the hospital with concerns (e.g., decreased fetal movement, bleeding, contractions).
Assessing the urgency of the situation and determining the appropriate level of care.
Monitoring vital signs and fetal heart rate.
Performing cervical exams (if appropriate and within scope of practice).
Collaborating with physicians on management plans.
Antepartum Monitoring:
Monitoring patients with high-risk pregnancies (e.g., gestational diabetes, preeclampsia) in the hospital setting.
Performing non-stress tests (NSTs) and biophysical profiles (BPPs).
Administering medications as prescribed (e.g., tocolytics to stop preterm labor).
Educating patients about their condition and treatment plan.
Consultation & Collaboration:
Consulting with physicians (obstetricians, perinatologists) on complex cases.
Participating in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient care.
Referring patients to other specialists as needed (e.g., lactation consultants, social workers).
Patient Advocacy:
Advocating for the patient's preferences and choices within the hospital setting.
Ensuring that patients receive culturally sensitive and respectful care.
Facilitating communication between the patient and other members of the healthcare team.
Pre-operative Care:
Preparing patients for scheduled cesarean sections or other procedures.
Providing pre-operative education and counseling.
Ensuring that all necessary consents are obtained.
Postpartum (After Birth):
Postpartum Assessment & Care:
Monitoring vital signs, uterine involution, lochia, and perineal healing.
Assessing for signs of postpartum complications (e.g., hemorrhage, infection, preeclampsia).
Providing pain management.
Administering medications as prescribed.
Breastfeeding Support:
Assisting mothers with breastfeeding initiation and latch.
Providing education on breastfeeding techniques, milk supply, and common breastfeeding challenges.
Troubleshooting breastfeeding problems.
Referring to lactation consultants as needed.
Newborn Assessment & Care (in some cases, depending on hospital policy and midwife scope):
Assessing newborn vital signs, weight, and feeding.
Providing education on newborn care (e.g., bathing, cord care, diapering).
Screening for jaundice and other newborn conditions.
Postpartum Education:
Providing education on postpartum recovery, contraception, and newborn care.
Answering patient questions and addressing concerns.
Providing information on community resources and support groups.
Discharge Planning:
Ensuring that patients have appropriate follow-up appointments scheduled.
Providing discharge instructions and medications.
Coordinating care with other healthcare providers.
Emotional Support:
Providing emotional support to mothers and families during the postpartum period.
Screening for postpartum depression and anxiety.
Referring to mental health professionals as needed.
Job Requirements
In addition to bringing your whole self to the workplace each day, qualified candidates will need the following:
- Two years recent nursing experience.
- Spanish speaking, preferred
- Masters degree in Certified Nurse Midwifery (ACNM accredited midwifery program required)
- Current state RN license for applicable state of employment
- Advanced Practice Nurse, required (Certified Nurse Midwife license for applicable state of employment)
- NRP certification; Evidence of current fetal monitoring education required
- BLS and ACLS, (AHA) required
Physical Requirements;
Medium Work - (Exert up to 50lbs force occasionally, and/or up to 20lbs frequently, and/or up to 10lbs constantly)
