PGY-1:
Foundational training
Foundational training emphasizes core rotations including inpatient medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, surgery, emergency medicine, and subspecialties.
The Mercy Medical Center, Redding Family Medicine Residency Program is a community-based training experience that prepares residents for full-spectrum family medicine in Northern California, emphasizing care for medically underserved populations.
As part of Dignity Health, we are a member of CommonSpirit Health's national network of more than 2,200 care sites across 24 states. That broad perspective supports our local commitment to community-based training, health equity, and compassionate care.
Primary training occurs at Mercy Medical Center, Redding, and the Mercy Family Health Center. Residents serve a diverse patient population including Medi-Cal and Medicare beneficiaries at these sites and community partner clinics.
Graduates are prepared for full-spectrum family medicine practice in areas of unmet need across Northern California.
Our extensive core curriculum provides comprehensive exposure to the full spectrum of family medicine, combining inpatient and outpatient training in various settings.
Foundational training emphasizes core rotations including inpatient medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, surgery, emergency medicine, and subspecialties.
Expanded clinical responsibility builds upon foundational skills with increased exposure to specialty clinics, geriatrics, rural medicine, and advanced inpatient care.
Independent practice preparation focuses on senior-level responsibilities, specialty clinics with a gynecology emphasis, electives, and independent rural practice.
Enthusiastic community faculty, core faculty, and residents work together to provide Academic Half Day and Noon Conference lectures on important topics in Family Medicine.
Our program utilizes a hybrid night float and traditional call system. PGY-1 residents average 20–24 calls per year, PGY-2 residents 16–20 calls, and PGY-3 residents 6–8 calls, all in 24-hour shifts.
Residents have direct hands-on experiences in all aspects of their training, including ample opportunities for procedures. All residents receive certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation, and Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics.
Residents are encouraged to engage in scholarly activity and quality improvement projects, contributing to medical knowledge and enhancing hospital quality metrics.
Elective rotations are available, particularly in the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years, allowing residents to gain in-depth experience in specific domains.
Training for the Mercy Redding Family Medicine Residency Program takes place across various inpatient and outpatient settings throughout Redding and the surrounding Northern California region.
