The St. Joseph's Medical Center Emergency Medicine Residency Program is a community-based training experience that prepares residents for full-spectrum emergency medicine in a high-volume, high-acuity setting.
As part of Dignity Health, we are a member of CommonSpirit Health's national network of more than 2,200 care sites across 24 states. That broad perspective supports our local commitment to community-based training, health equity and compassionate care. Our main training site, St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton, California, serves an ethnically, culturally, and socio-economically diverse population in the San Joaquin Valley with a high volume of pediatric cases and significant acuity. Upon graduation, residents are exceptionally prepared to care for any individual in a diverse range of emergent, urgent and ambulatory care settings.

Thank you for your interest in the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton, California. We are committed to continuing our tradition of training exceptionally skilled, compassionate and well-rounded emergency physicians who are prepared to serve patients in any clinical setting.
What distinguishes our program is the combination of high-acuity clinical exposure, close faculty mentorship and a mission-driven commitment to the community we serve. Residents learn to make thoughtful, decisive decisions in the emergency department while developing the habits of collaboration, humility, and advocacy that patients deserve.
Our residents train in a busy emergency department located in the heart of a medically underserved region, where they encounter high-acuity illness, complex presentations and late-stage disease with exceptional frequency. This clinical environment prepares graduates to practice confidently across a wide range of settings, from academic medical centers to resource-limited communities.
Academically, the program offers robust training in quality improvement, research and emergency medicine subspecialty areas, supported by diverse fellowship-trained faculty in Ultrasound, Simulation, Wilderness Medicine and Medical Toxicology. Just as importantly, we work to foster a supportive learning environment, strong mentorship and camaraderie across specialties.
Founded in 2018, our program was one of the first two residency programs at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. Since then, graduate medical education at our institution has expanded to include nine residency programs and five fellowship programs. Although we are still a young program, we have made tremendous progress in building an engaging educational curriculum and a supportive training culture through the dedication and collaboration of our residents and faculty.
I am extremely proud to lead this program and grateful for the foundation built by those who came before me. I look forward to working tirelessly to continue its growth and to graduate diverse, clinically excellent physicians who are prepared to care for any patient who comes through the door.

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program is a three-year ACGME-accredited training program, with each year consisting of 13 four-week blocks. Our curriculum emphasizes comprehensive emergency medicine training across various clinical settings.

Additional Curriculum Experiences
Didactics and protected education time
Residents are provided with asynchronous study resources including ROSH review, PEER Prep, EM:RAP, Rapid Sequence Radiology and ECG Stampede. They participate in weekly didactic conferences, simulation sessions, ultrasound modules, seminars and other non-patient care learning experiences, with sufficient time for independent, self-directed learning.
Procedural training
Residents participate in resuscitations and procedures, advancing with progressively increasing responsibilities as their knowledge and skill set advances with increasing experience and training. Residents complete most of their ACGME required procedure numbers by the end of their second year.
Scholarly activity and quality improvement
Residents must complete both a scholarly activity and quality improvement project. Our program offers residents outstanding training in quality improvement and research, with numerous opportunities available for both faculty and residents at our community hospital.

Application to the Emergency Medicine Residency Program must be made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), utilizing ResidencyCAS. We only accept and review applications via the ResidencyCAS system.
Interview Season Information
Factors important in the resident selection process include academic qualifications, dependability, responsibility, maturity, courtesy, confidence, leadership skills, interpersonal and communication skills, work ethic and US clinical experience. Applicants from the Central Valley of California will be strongly considered.
International Medical Graduates
We do not independently sponsor any Visas. J-1 Visas can be accepted if sponsored through ECFMG.

Medical Student Clerkships
St. Joseph’s Medical Center and the Department of Emergency Medicine welcomes 4th year medical students to apply to our 4-week Clinical Clerkship in Emergency Medicine. We also offer clerkship rotations in ultrasonography and toxicology. Medical students will work as part of the clinical team, attend residency didactics and participate in a unique medical student education curriculum. Interested students must be in good standing and attend an LCME or AOA accredited medical school. Only students in an accredited health sciences training program are eligible to apply. We are unable to accommodate international students at this time. Clinical clerkships are not a prerequisite for acceptance into our residency programs. Students can apply for clerkship rotations through Clinician Nexus.
