The St. Joseph's Medical Center Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program is a community-based training experience that prepares fellows for critical care medicine in diverse emergent, urgent, and ambulatory care settings. We care for an ethnically, culturally, and socio-economically diverse population in our community.
As part of Dignity Health, we are a member of CommonSpirit Health's national network of more than 2,200 care sites across 24 states. That broad perspective supports our local commitment to community-based training, health equity and compassionate care.
Primary training sites include St. Joseph's Medical Center and San Joaquin General Hospital. Fellows gain exposure to a wide range of critically ill patients including medical, surgical, trauma, cardiac, and neurocritical care.

The mission of the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship is to enable our trainees to transform into independently functioning critical care physicians who provide compassionate and exceptional care to the most critically ill patients. Fellows engage in a comprehensive education curriculum covering the breadth and depth of all aspects of critical care medicine through clinical exposure, procedural experience, quality improvement projects, opportunities for clinical research, routine didactic lectures, grand rounds, and multidisciplinary conferences.

The fellowship curriculum provides comprehensive training through clinical exposure, procedural experience, and didactic education across various intensive care settings. Training occurs over two years, focusing on progressive responsibility and advanced critical care concepts.
This year includes rotations in the Medical Intensive Care Unit, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Care Unit, Pulmonology/Post-ICU, Research/Quality Improvement, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Neurocritical Care/Trauma Intensive Care Unit, and Electives.
This year builds on foundational skills with continued rotations in the Medical Intensive Care Unit, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Care Unit, Research/Quality Improvement, Neurocritical Care/Trauma Intensive Care Unit, and Electives.
Elective rotations are available in Anesthesia, Cardiology, Nephrology, and Infectious Disease, allowing fellows to tailor their training to specific interests and career goals.
Fellows receive training in advanced procedures such as intubation, central lines, chest tubes, mechanical ventilation, and hemodynamic monitoring, complemented by hands-on courses and ultrasound training.
Fellows are encouraged to conduct research projects, case studies, and scholarly activities to advance the field of critical care medicine. Training also includes strategies to enhance patient safety and quality of care.
Simulation training is integrated into the curriculum and includes procedural and rapid response team scenarios. Sessions are led by emergency medicine and critical care attending physicians with support from the simulation team and scheduled outside protected didactic time.
Training primarily takes place at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Stockton, California.

Stockton, CA, is a historic gold rush port city on the banks of the mighty San Joaquin River, offering a diverse community and convenient access to popular Northern California destinations. It is a 60-minute drive to the San Francisco Bay Area and a 90-minute drive to the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Application Process
Critical Care Medicine (CCM) Fellowship positions are available to candidates who are Board eligible or certified in Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine. Applicants shall have, or be able to obtain, a California medical license prior to the start of their fellowship.
Application to the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program must be made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), utilizing the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We only accept and review applications via the ERAS system.
St. Joseph’s Medical Center and the Department of Emergency Medicine welcomes 4th year medical students to apply to our 4-week Clinical Clerkship in Emergency Medicine. We also offer clerkship rotations in ultrasonography and toxicology. Medical students will work as part of the clinical team, attend residency didactics and participate in a unique medical student education curriculum. Interested students must be in good standing and attend an LCME or AOA accredited medical school. Only students in an accredited health sciences training program are eligible to apply. We are unable to accommodate international students at this time. Clinical clerkships are not a prerequisite for acceptance into our residency programs. Students can apply for clerkship rotations through Clinician Nexus.
